Area roundup: Errors cost WVU in loss

West Virginia led Youngstown State 5-4 in the seventh inning, but the Mountaineers' six errors (including four in the seventh inning) caught up to them in a 10-7 loss on Friday in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The Penguins scored five runs, three of them earned, in that inning to take the lead for good. The Mountaineers (1-3) had 12 hits, their third consecutive game with 10 or more, but could not catch YSU in the final innings.

Corey Walter, who pitched five innings and allowed five runs and eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk, took the loss for WVU.

West Virginia will play Youngstown State again at noon today before taking on Wake Forest at 4 p.m.

  • TECH BASEBALL: WVU Tech will host four games over the next three days, starting today when Ohio Valley visits the Golden Bears at 2:15 p.m. at East Bank. Tech (0-6) will also host Cincinnati Clermont in East Bank on Sunday for a doubleheader starting at noon before playing a doubleheader against Point Park at starting at 1 p.m. on Monday at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley.

  • TECH SOFTBALL: WVU Tech dropped both games of a doubleheader against Columbia College to open its 2013 season. The Golden Bears (0-2) fell 6-0 to the Fighting Koalas (5-1) in the first game and 4-3 in the second game.
