WL men, Glenville women top seeds for WVC tourney

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Liberty secured the top seed and a first-round bye in the West Virginia Conference men's basketball tournament, which begins Tuesday at campus sites.

Charleston (18-8, 14-8 WVC) downed West Virginia State (10-18, 7-15) in the regular-season finale Saturday to garner the fifth seed while State picked up the 12th seed. The two will square off again at Eddie King Gymnasium in Charleston at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in a first-round game.

UC won both regular-season meetings with State, notching a 92-56 win at Eddie King Gym on Jan. 12 and prevailing 92-75 Saturday in Institute.

In other first-round games Tuesday, No. 2 Fairmont State hosts No. 15 Ohio Valley, No. 14 Bluefield State travels to Alderson-Broadus, No. 4 Wheeling Jesuit hosts No. 13 Davis & Elkins, No. 11 Glenville State heads to No. 6 Shepherd, No. 7 Seton Hill will be home against No. 10 West Virginia Wesleyan and No. 9 Pitt Johnstown heads to No. 8 Concord.

The men's quarterfinals will be held Thursday with semifinals on Friday and the championship game on Saturday, all at the Charleston Civic Center.

WVC women

Glenville State garnered the top seed in the WVC women's tournament and will have a first-round bye.

West Virginia State (13-13, 12-10) earned the No. 6 spot in the tournament and will host defending conference champion West Virginia Wesleyan (8-17, 7-15) Monday at 7 p.m.

No. 8 Pitt Johnstown (14-11, 12-10) hosts No. 9 Charleston (14-12, 11-11) Monday at 7 p.m. in a rematch of last year's first-round game.

In other first-round games Monday, No. 2 West Liberty hosts No. 15 Ohio Valley, No. 3 Fairmont State plays No. 14 Wheeling Jesuit, No. 4 Davis & Elkins entertains No. 13 Alderson-Broaddus, No. 12 Concord travels to No. 5 Seton Hill and No. 7 Shepherd plays host to No. 10 Bluefield State.
