WVC roundup: UC picks up 72-64 victory at Pitt Johnstown

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Kali Cuttaia produced a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds as No. 9 Charleston downed No. 8 Pitt Johnstown 72-64 in the opening round of the West Virginia Conference women's basketball tournament Monday in Johnstown, Pa.

Jessie Cowden also contributed 14 points for the Golden Eagles (14-12) while Tianni Kelly added 12. Kelsey Sleighter paced the Mountain Cats (14-11) with 16 points.

Charleston will face top-seeded Glenville State in the quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Charleston Civic Center. UC lost both regular-season meetings with the Pioneers.

  • WEST LIBERTY 81, OHIO VALLEY 39: No. 2 West Liberty jumped out to a 36-13 halftime lead and the host Hilltoppers cruised to an opening-round win over Ohio Valley.
  • Meghan Wiseman posted 21 points for West Liberty (20-7) while Hillary Southworth added 17. Kayla Parsley led Ohio Valley (2-25) with 13 points.

    The Hilltoppers will face No. 7 Shepherd in the quarterfinals at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

  • FAIRMONT 83, WHEELING 47: No. 3 Fairmont State opened the tournament with a convincing win over No. 14 Wheeling Jesuit at Joe Retton Arena in Fairmont.
  • Emily Lohr paced the Falcon offense with 17 points, including four 3-pointers, to go with six rebounds. Hailey Garrett added 16 points while Kaitlin Snyder scored 11 points. Wheeling Jesuit (8-19) was led by Jaila Bryant with 12 points.

    The Falcons (20-9) advance to take on No. 11 West Virginia Wesleyan at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Civic Center.

    The Bobcats were 66-56 winners over West Virginia State on Monday in Institute. Wesleyan defeated Fairmont State 82-62 in the only meeting between the teams this season.

  • SHEPHERD 62, BLUEFIELD STATE 61: Rachel Johnson drained a 3-pointer with two seconds left as No. 7 Shepherd pulled out a first-round win over No. 10 Bluefield State.
