Area roundup: Marshall baseball loses to Charlotte 7-3

The Marshall baseball team led twice in the early going but ultimately fell to host Charlotte 7-3 Monday at Hayes Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.

Freshman starting pitcher Michael Taylor (0-1) suffered the loss for Marshall (3-3) despite allowing only one earned run - three total - in 22/3 innings. Taylor struck out two and walked three.

Charlotte starter Brock Hudgens (1-0) lasted five innings to get the win. Hudgens struck out five, walked two and gave up five hits.

Andrew Dundon went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI for the Herd.

  • WVU SPORTS: The West Virginia women's tennis team will host Virginia Tech on Saturday at the Charleston Tennis Club. Warmups begin at 10 a.m. Doubles matches start at 11 a.m. followed by singles matches.

  • West Virginia sophomore Thomas Kyanko has qualified to shoot small-bore at the NCAA rifle championships March 8-9 at Converse Hall and French Field House in Columbus, Ohio.
  •  Kyanko is one of eight student-athletes selected to shoot at the championships, and he earned one of the four small-bore spots based on his 580 score at the team's NCAA qualifying match on Feb. 17.

  • Following her distinction as the Great American Rifle Conference Shooter and Senior Shooter of the Year, West Virginia senior Petra Zublasing has been named the WVU student-athlete of the week.
  • The Italy native set her second WVU small-bore record in three weeks and won the discipline title with a 595 (199 prone, 199 standing, 197 kneeling) score in the open relay and a 101.4 in the final for a 696.4 mark Saturday. She is the fourth different Mountaineer to win the GARC small-bore title.
