CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Liberty will take a No. 1 national ranking into the West Virginia Conference men's basketball tournament.

The Hilltoppers (27-1), ranked No. 3 last week, climbed two places and leapfrogged No. 2 Metro State (23-1) and No. 3 Western Washington (25-1) for the top spot in the NABC Division II coaches poll. Both Metro State (from Denver) and Western Washington suffered their first losses last week.

The 17 coaches in the poll were split, giving nine first-place votes to the Hilltoppers and four each to Metro State and Western Washington.

West Liberty was ranked No. 1 from the start of the season until the University of Charleston handed the Hilltoppers their only loss on Jan. 14.
