Class AA girls basketball regional co-finals full of ranked teams
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The girls high school basketball Class AA regional co-finals feature nine of the top 10 teams in the final Associated Press poll.
The regional co-finals tip off around the state tonight, with the winners advancing to next week's state tournament, which will take place March 6-9 at the Charleston Civic Center.
Fairmont Senior, No. 6 in the final Associated Press poll, visits Ravenswood in Region 1 while No. 7 North Marion hosts Braxton County. In Region 2, No. 7 Berkeley Springs is at No. 2 Bridgeport and Frankfort hosts Lincoln.
No. 10 Summers County visits PikeView in Region 3 while No. 1 and defending state champion Westside hosts Bluefield. In Region 4, No. 5 Clay County visits No. 9 Tolsia and No. 3 Nicholas County hosts Scott. Lincoln, Ravenswood and Scott also received votes in the last poll. (See Page 2B for pairings.)
Fairmont Senior eked past host Ravenswood 47-45 earlier this month. Summers, which won five straight AA titles from 2007-11, split with PikeView with each team winning on its home court and with both games decided by a total of seven points. Nicholas beat Scott, which has played in the last three state championship games but lost all three, 48-41 on Feb. 11.
Today's games will be uncharted territory for some with North Marion, the former three-time champion in AAA from 2009-11, and Braxton, Berkeley Springs and Bridgeport, Frankfort and Lincoln, Westside and Bluefield and Clay and Tolsia not playing during the regular season.
