WVC roundup: Fairmont State closes out Ohio Valley 96-85

No. 2 seed Fairmont State ended the game on a 15-5 run over the final five minutes, securing a 96-85 win over Ohio Valley in the opening round of the West Virginia Conference Men's basketball tournament Tuesday in Fairmont.

Malik Stith posted a team-best 19 points for the Falcons (20-7) while Brendan Cooper connected for 18. Jerry Macon Jr. scored a game-high 27 points, including 21 on 3-pointers, for Ohio Valley (3-26) and Ashton Brown amassed 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Fairmont will play No. 7 Seton Hill in the quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Charleston Civic Center.

  • GLENVILLE 88, SHEPHERD 83: The No. 11 Glenville State went on the road and defeated No. 6 Shepherd.
  • The Pioneers (13-15) were led by Jamel Morris with 22 points while Kevin Gray and Lamar Mallory both scored 13 points. Shepherd (15-12) was paced by Chad Moore with a game-high 29 points while Austin Cunningham scored 14.

    Glenville State advances to face No. 3 Alderson-Broaddus at 1 p.m. Thursday.

  • WHEELING JESUIT 77, D&E 69: Eric Seifert produced 17 points as No. 4 Wheeling Jesuit posted a first-round win over No. 13 Davis & Elkins.
  • Joe Prati scored 16 points for the Cardinals (18-9), who will face No. 5 Charleston in the quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. D'Quan Lynch paced D&E (8-19) with 20 points.

  • PITT JOHNSTOWN 92, CONCORD 82: No. 8 Concord cut a 21-point first-half deficit down to just six points but was unable to complete the comeback against No. 9 Pitt Johnstown at the Carter Center in Athens.
