Roundup: West Virginia State baseball drops 4th in a row

West Virginia State remained winless on its southern baseball trip, losing 14-8 Monday at Winston-Salem State in North Carolina.

Zach Cloxton had three hits and three runs for the Yellow Jackets, who fell to 2-8 overall and 0-4 in a four-game tour through North and South Carolina. Noah Blackhurst drove in three runs with two hits and a sacrifice fly.

State jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the top of the first, but Winston-Salem State answered with three runs in both the first and second innings before pulling away. Levi Grassley and Rafael Gonzalez each drove in four runs for the Rams.

Jackets starter Jesus Rivero took the loss after allowing six runs on four hits in 12/3 innings.

  • HURRICANE SOCCER: Three Hurricane High School girls soccer players will sign national letters of intent today at 11:15 a.m. at the Hurricane High School library.

    Brittany Minor will play for Alderson-Broaddus, Taylor Morton will attend West Virginia Wesleyan and Callie McClanahan will suit up for Elizabethtown (Pa.). All three athletes have played club soccer together for the past nine years with the West Virginia Soccer Club Rowdies.

  • WVC AWARDS: Katelyn Norton of Davis & Elkins has been named the West Virginia Conference softball player of the week while teammate Alanna Jones has earned conference pitcher accolades.

    Norton registered a .533 batting average after going 8 for 15 on the week, driving in five runs.

    Jones garnered a 2-0 week in the circle for D&E, working 16 innings while giving up just one earned run and striking out 22. In her last five appearances, she has registered 32 strikeouts and has given up just one earned run.
