Payne, who finished her four-year career with 1,493, led the Greyhounds to the state tournament for the first time since 1991 this past season. She was a Class A first-team all-state selection after averaging 24.6 points per game.

MU SOCCER: The Marshall men's team received two plaques from the NCAA this week for leading the country in statistical categories. The Herd was No. 1 in the nation with a 0.898 save percentage, and goalkeeper Daniel Withrow, now with Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew, was the national individual leader with a 0.895 save percentage.

In the first game, State starting pitcher Devin Bowles went six innings and allowed just four hits to go with five strikeouts in the Yellow Jackets' 4-2 win.
State's bats came alive in the second game as the Jackets rattled off 14 hits, including home runs from Andrew Pickering, Jack Hudson, Noah Blackhurst and Eric Craft in a 14-11 win.
State (6-10, 5-3 West Virginia Conference) stays at home for its next series with Concord visiting Institute for a three-game set starting Friday.
nnUC BASEBALL: The University of Charleston split a doubleheader with visiting Seton Hill on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles dropped the first game 7-6 but bounced back to take the second game 3-2.
Josh Weinberg took the loss for UC (6-9, 4-2 WVC) in the first game after allowing five earned runs in 51/3 innings. In the second game, Mike Hoeft singled in the bottom of the seventh inning, bringing UC's Brad Johnson around to score the winning run.
nnPAYNE TO SIGN: Valley senior guard Alexis Payne will sign to play basketball with Rio Grande (Ohio) at 10:30 a.m. March 27 at the high school.
