Area roundup: W.Va. State outslugs Concord in 16-14 win

West Virginia State rallied for 11 combined runs in the eighth and ninth innings, capped by a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth by Jordan Simpson, to beat visiting Concord 16-14 on Saturday.

 

State (8-11, 6-3 West Virginia Conference) opened the game with one run in the first and three in the second to take a 4-1 lead, but Concord (12-13, 7-5) came storming back with five runs in the fourth, one each in the fifth and sixth, another five in the seventh and one in the ninth before Simpson's blast.

Andrew Pickering (who also had a home run), Zachary Cloxton, Noah Blackhurst and Cody Smith joined Simpson as Yellow Jackets with two RBIs against the Mountain Lions. Pitcher Joshua Falbo pitched the ninth for State and got the win.

  • TECH WINS TWO: The WVU Tech baseball team won a pair of games from visiting Ohio Midwestern, 10-0 and 21-1, Saturday in East Bank.

    Zach Sizemore went a combined 5 for 8 with five RBIs for the Golden Bears (16-14), who extended their winning streak to nine games, while Austin Lucas had five hits and drove home three runs. Ohio Midwestern only managed one run and seven hits in the doubleheader.

  • MU BASEBALL SPLITS: In the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader at Radford Baseball Stadium, Marshall's baseball team clung to a five-run first and defeated Radford 5-4. The victory was preceded by an 8-3 Herd loss earlier in the afternoon.

    Michael Taylor (3-1) threw seven innings in game two for his third win in four starts for the Herd (10-12).  Taylor struck out four and gave up only four hits. Nathan Gomez combined for five hits including two doubles and four RBIs for Marshall while Isaac Ballou went 4 for 8 in the twin bill.

  • GOLF TOURNAMENT: The Charleston Catholic Shamrock Golf Tournament will be held May 5 at Little Creek Park in South Charleston. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
