Prep roundup: Hurricane's Adams shuts out SC 2-0

NICHOLAS 2, CLAY 1: Wil Mayes and Brandon Hunter of Nicholas County (1-0) combined on a four-hitter to win a pitchers duel against host Clay County's tandem of Alex Burkhamer and Dalton Holcomb, who teamed up for a three-hitter. Holcomb went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Panthers (3-1).
LINCOLN COUNTY 5, SHERMAN 2: Grant Bates had two hits, including a homer and drove in four runs to lead the visiting Panthers (2-1) to victory. Matt Huffman's sacrifice fly brought in the go-ahead run in the seventh. John Hunter was 2 for 3 for the Tide.
HOOVER 2, WAYNE 1: Kayla Sheets rapped a two-out run-scoring single in the top of the seventh to snap a 1-all tie for the visiting Huskies against Class AA defending state champion Wayne. Sheets, which finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs, drove in Hoover's first run on a two-out single in the second. Payton Fetty banged out a pair of doubles, including a two-out RBI double in the fourth. Allison Rager allowed one unearned run on four hits with seven strikeouts. Rowe gave up one earned run on six hits while fanning seven.
CATHOLIC SWEEPS: Ally Persily fired a five-inning shutout and went 2 for 3 and Brianna Ross was 3 for 3 with a triple as Charleston Catholic (2-0) blanked host Lewis County 8-0 to cap a doubleheader sweep. In the opener, seven different Irish players had two hits apiece in a 16-8 victory. Both hits for Darian Vines were doubles.
SCOTT 4, LOGAN 0: Jennifer Miller pitched a shutout, scattering eight hits, and Chasity Ball's RBI single keyed a three-run third inning for the host Skyhawks (3-1). Aaron Ward had two hits for the Wildcats (2-2).
SHERMAN 15, RIVERSIDE 3: Mackenzie Smith had three RBIs on two hits and pitcher Whitney Laws got the win as visiting Sherman beat Fayetteville. Catcher Hali Jarrell added two RBIs on two hits.
SHERMAN 4, RIVERSIDE 3: For the Tide, Bailey Harless hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to win it for Sherman. Riverside's Cassady Schmidt went 1 for 4 with an RBI.
PARKERSBURG 7, WINFIELD 6: A Winfield error in the bottom of the ninth inning allowed the winning run to score as Parkersburg edged visiting Winfield. Brittany Allison went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Big Reds while Mallory Goots added a pair of hits and drove home three runs. Natalie Miskofsky and Brenna Ferguson had two hits apiece for the Generals (3-4).
RIVERSIDE 12, FAYETTEVILLE 0: Sarah Winter pitched a two-hitter as Riverside shut out Fayetteville in a three-inning mercy-rule road win. Winter also produced at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two triples and three RBIs for the Warriors (5-3) while Harley Justice and Destini Diegert added two hits apiece. Kayla Workman and Cassidy Bayes had the hits for Fayetteville.
SA SWEEPS: Madi Marshall went a combined 6 for 6 with two doubles, a triple and her first career home run as St. Albans swept a doubleheader over visiting Woodrow Wilson by scores of 6-0 and 11-1. In game one, Haili McCown and Whitney Jones had two hits apiece for the Red Dragons (5-0) while Ali Haynes struck out 10 batters. Karigen Spurlock went 2 for 3 for the Flying Eagles. In the four-inning nightcap, Haynes and Jones each posted two hits.
