Roundup: State sweeps doubleheader from A-B

The West Virginia State baseball team continued its winning ways Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep at Alderson-Broaddus.

State beat A-B 16-2 in the first game and 4-3 in the second game. State has won 17  of its last 21 games.

In the first game for the Yellow Jackets, junior center fielder Cody Smith went 3 for 5 with two doubles and seven RBIs, including one for taking a walk with the bases loaded in the sixth inning. Pitcher Devin Bowles got his first win of the season after allowing just one run on four hits in five innings of work for State (18-14, 16-7 West Virginia Conference).

A-B's Shane Snyder hit a seventh-inning home run and pitcher Brandon Quay took the loss after allowing eight runs on seven hits in just three innings.

In the second game, Garrett Kiser's RBI double to left field in the fifth inning proved to be the deciding blow.

State stays on the road for its next series when the Yellow Jackets visit Glenville State for three games starting with a Saturday doubleheader.

  • UC BASEBALL: The University of Charleston split its doubleheader at Wheeling Jesuit, winning the first game and losing the second.

    In the first game, Wheeling Jesuit jumped to an early 3-0 lead. The teams traded leads for the next few innings before the Golden Eagles (13-19, 10-11 WVC) rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to secure a 9-7 win. Michael Hooper got the win in relief, allowing one run on two hits after taking over for starter Jake Ciolfi. Corey Lakatos pitched the seventh to get the save for UC.

    The Golden Eagles managed just a single run in the second game as Wheeling Jesuit evened the day with a 4-1 win. UC scored its run in the fifth inning when a Tommy Rein sacrifice fly to left field scored designated hitter Anthony Brunetti.

  • WVU BASEBALL: Fielding woes hampered West Virginia as the Mountaineesr fell 9-0 to Ohio State Tuesday at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.

    WVU (17-16) committed three errors in the first two innings and was never able to recover. Ryan Tuntland, Ryan McBroom and Chris Rasky had one hit apiece to lead the Mountaineers. Dan Dierdorff (1-4) allowed three runs, all unearned, on five hits in five innings, striking out five with two walks for WVU.

  • GSC HOF: Glenville State College has announced its newest class for the GSC Athletic Hall of Fame. Bill Whetsell (Class of 1946), Bob Reynolds (1958), Bill Casto (1967), Steve Seals (1970) and Gary Ray (1971) will be inducted on May 18 at the Alan B. Mollohan Campus Community Center.

  • CONCORD CAMPS: Concord University will host three football camps this summer for high school players and teams. A players camp will begin June 23 and last through June 25 while a 7-on- 7 tournament and "Big Man" skills clinic will both be on June 26.

    Concord will also host a coaching clinic on April 19 and 20 with former University of Charleston head coach Tony DeMeo scheduled as the featured speaker.
