Prep softball: Wayne pulls away for 5-1 win over Sissonville

Savannah Perry laced a two-out, run-scoring triple and Emily Fry followed with a two-run homer in the sixth inning as host Wayne broke open a close game and notched a 5-1 prep softball win over Sissonville Tuesday.

Class AA No. 4 Wayne (13-4) only led 2-1 before the uprising in the sixth. The Indians scored their lone run in the fourth when Alexee Haynes led off with a double, went to third on a passed ball and scored on an RBI single by Abbey Jordan.

  • HURRICANE 4, RIVERSIDE 1: Maddie Hebb doubled twice and knocked in three runs for the host Redskins. Amber Null and Cassi Sargent each doubled for AAA No. 2 Hurricane (20-3) and Courtney Rogers held the Warriors to three singles and fanned four.
  • SC 11, GW 0: Alli Burdette struck out seven over four no-hit innings as visiting South Charleston scored a mercy-rule win on the road. Burdette added two hits with a home run and three RBIs for the Black Eagles while Kayli Hudson was 3 for 3 with a double and drove in a pair of runs. n BUFFALO SWEEPS: Chelsey Parkins and Ali Burdette each fired two-hit shutouts and struck out nine to lead host Buffalo past Richwood 10-0 in four innings and 9-0 in five innings.
  • Parkins went 2 for 2 with two RBIs in the opener while Olivia Dunn pounded out two hits and two RBIs. In the nightcap, Burdette went 2 for 3 with two RBIs for Class A No. 3 Buffalo (14-4) while Katie Higginbotham legged out two hits and drove in two runs and Jordan Bailey had two RBIs.

  • BOYD 10, LINCOLN COUNTY 7: Bri Crooks went 2 for 3 with a triple, home run and a pair of RBIs as Boyd County (Ky.) earned a road win. Morgan Hutchison went 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI for Lincoln County (18-6) while Sarah Barrett and Brooke West posted two hits each.
  • VALLEY 9, FAYETTEVILLE 4: Valley produced six runs in the sixth inning as the Greyhounds recorded a home win.
  • Kelsey Bird belted a pair of triples and drove home two runs for Valley (9-2) while Kailey Cooper had two hits. Ashley Gilkerson went 2 for 3 for Fayetteville (7-9).

  • NITRO 8, HUNTINGTON 2: Shelby Bowen's two-run double highlighted a five-run fifth that carried the host Wildcats past the Highlanders.
  • The teams were deadlocked 2-2 until Nitro plated five runs in the fifth for a 7-2 advantage. Melissa Belcher went 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs for the Wildcats (8-10) while Halie Miller pounded out two hits, including a double, and knocked in three runs. Rachel Bias doubled in a run for Huntington.

  • SCOTT TAKES TWO: Scott scored nine runs in the second en route to an 11-1 three-inning victory over visiting Poca in the nightcap to complete a doubleheader sweep. The Skyhawks took the opener 12-1 in four innings.
  • Katie Marcum went 3 for 3 with three RBIs for the Skyhawks in the first game and Sara Browning legged out two hits and drove in two runs. Haley Wagner went 2 for 2 with a double for the Dots (3-11).

    In the second game, Allyson Johnson cracked a two-run round-tripper for AA No. 3 Scott (15-5). Wagner singled for Poca's only hit.

    Monday's games

  • POINT 8, WINFIELD: Madison Barker gave up two hits and struck out 11 as Point Pleasant downed host Winfield.
  • Barker helped herself at the plate with two hits for the Big Blacks while Kaci Riffle went 3 for 4. Kenna Markham and Alison Chambers had the lone hits for the Generals.

  • WILLIAMSTOWN 5, RAVENSWOOD 4: Charlotte Gray went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs as Williamstown picked up a home win.
  • Courtney Townsend also had two hits for the Yellowjackets. Savana Casto, Sidnee Morgan and Katie Buckbee each had two hits for Ravenswood.
