Area roundup: Musgrave pitches WVU past Texas
Harrison Musgrave held Texas to six hits and struck out nine, giving West Virginia a 1-0 victory in the start of their three-game Big 12 series at Austin, Texas.
Musgrave (5-1) walked just two and improved his earned-run average to 2.70. All the Longhorns' hits were singles and they did not reach third base.
WVU (22-17, 5-5) finally scored in the eighth inning. With one out, Billy Fleming singled and Alan Filauro walked, chasing Texas starter Parker French.
Reliever Corey Knebel then threw a wild pitch, advancing the runners to second and third. After Taylor Munden walked to load the bases, Bobby Boyd hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Mountaineers and Longhorns (20-16, 4-9) play at 3 p.m. today and 1 p.m. Sunday.
MARSHALL BASEBALL: Marshall scored an unearned run in the top of the 10th inning to score a 5-4 victory over Central Florida in the first game of their Conference USA series.
Matt Kirkwood reached on an infield single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, UCF first baseman James Vasquez committed an error on an Isaac Ballou grounder, scoring Kirkwood.
Josh King pitched the bottom of the 10th to pick up the save, preserving the win for Josh King (2-1). Wayland Moore started for the Herd (14-22, 4-6) and pitched five scoreless innings, but UCF (20-19, 6-7) scored four runs in the seventh off Matt Margaritonda to tie the game.
Marshall pounded out 12 hits, including four doubles. Kirkwood went 3 for 4 and Nathan Gomez went 3 for 5, both knocking in a run.
WVU SOCCER: The West Virginia men's soccer team has announced the addition of Jack Elliott of London to its recruiting class.
Elliott was a defender at Old Wilsonians Football Club while attending Wilson's School in England. He was the top goal scorer for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons and led the team to a 20-2-2 record as team captain.
During Elliott's career, the team has won four District Cup championships and has been a three-time runner-up in the County Cup.
BENEFIT TOURNAMENTS: The Charleston Catholic Shamrock golf tournament is set for 9 a.m. May 5 at Little Creek Golf Course in South Charleston. The cost is $65 per person and proceeds will benefit the Charleston Catholic academic and athletic programs.

CORRECTION: Defensive tackle Ken Smith has been erroneously listed as a redshirt junior on the Marshall spring roster, and that was reflected in a story in Friday's Gazette. He will be a senior this fall.
