Roundup: Hurricane earns No. 1 seed for MSAC softball tournament

The Mountain State Athletic Conference softball tournament championship will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday at Hurricane High School with place-winner games being held at the higher-seeded teams.

The Redskins earned the No. 1 seed and will play No. 4 South Charleston at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday with No. 2 Cabell Midland and No. 3 Ripley squaring off 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first semifinal.

The consolation game will be played at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday and the championship game will follow.

  • WVU BASEBALL: West Virginia second baseman Billy Fleming executed a perfect hit and run in the 10th inning to give the Mountaineers a 6-3 win and a series victory at Texas on Sunday.

    Ryan McBroom scored the go-ahead run on the play and Jacob Rice added a two-run single to account for the final tally.

    The Mountaineers (23-18 overall, 6-6 Big 12) will play at Youngstown State at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

  • MU BASEBALL: Brian Adkins held Marshall to just three hits as Central Florida earned an 11-0 decision over the Thundering Herd in a game that ended in the seventh inning due to Conference USA's 10-run mercy rule.

    Chase Vogelbach, Isaac Ballou, and Nathan Gomez each had a hit for Marshall (14-24 overall, 4-8 C-USA). The Herd will play Ohio at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Beckley.

  • WVIAC TENNIS: No. 1-seed Bluefield State earned a 5-0 victory over No. 2 Charleston on Sunday in the West Virginia Conference men's tennis championship match held at Schoenbaum Courts.

    Both teams will play in the NCAA tournament with region pairings being released later in the week.

  • MU TRACK: Sophomore Lauren Dyer won the triple jump at the Heart of the Bluegrass Classic Saturday night, jumping 38 feet, 113/4 inches. The Thundering Herd's 4x100-meter relay team finished second.
