Roundup: WVU shuts out Kansas

Sophomore left-hander Harrison Musgrave fired his second straight complete-game shutout as West Virginia University edged Kansas 1-0 Friday night in a Big 12 matchup in front of 2,053 at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley.

Musgrave surrendered four hits with five strikeouts and one walk. The former Bridgeport High School standout owns a 4-0 record with a 0.97 ERA in conference play.

Senior Brady Wilson tripled in sophomore Taylor Munden in the bottom of the eighth Friday to provide the winning run for the Mountaineers (25-18 overall, 7-6 Big 12). Connor McKay had two hits for the Jayhawks (25-16, 9-7).

The teams will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. today rather than single games today and Sunday. Fans that had purchased tickets for the Sunday game are encouraged to use the tickets today.

  • STATE SWEEPS UC: Andrew Pickering, Noah Blackhurst and Garrett Kiser each belted home runs as host West Virginia State outslugged the University of Charleston 11-9 in the nightcap to sweep a West Virginia Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon in Institute.

    Russell Thompson scattered three earned runs and six hits while striking out 11 as the Yellow Jackets downed the Golden Eagles 8-3 in the opener. Bill Smith went 2 for 3 with two RBIs for State while Pickering and Noah Blackhurst (2 for 4) drove in two apiece. Ryan Foster and Igor Molina smacked round-trippers for UC.

    Pickering and Kiser each finished 3 for 3 with three RBIs in the second game for State. Molina rapped out two hits for UC.

  • STATE SOFTBALL: Sara Pelegreen tossed a three-hit shutout as West Virginia State shut out Ohio Valley 4-0 Friday evening in the nightcap to complete a West Virginia Conference doubleheader sweep.

    Desiree Giffin's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh sent the Yellow Jackets past the Fighting Scots 4-3 in the opener. Giffin finished with two RBIs while Victoria Crawford went 3 for 4 for State. Elora Oprins laced two hits and drove in a run for Ohio Valley.

    Pelegreen fanned four and walked two in the second game for the Yellow Jackets while Sabrina Schouten, Crawford, Mattie Best and Megan Schoolcraft each had RBIs.

  • Poca's Maddie McGrew and Sissonville's Bekah Baldwin each signed Friday to play softball with West Virginia State.
  • McGrew, who is sitting out this season after a knee injury in basketball, led the Kanawha Valley in batting average last season, hitting .564. Baldwin is batting .466 with 22 RBIs for Sissonville this season.

  • UC SOFTBALL: The University of Charleston took advantage of two errors in a 4-2 victory over visiting Glenville State in the nightcap to gain a split of a West Virginia Conference doubleheader.

    Morgan Scarpellini's two-run home run propelled the Pioneers to a 2-1 win over the Golden Eagles in the opener.

  • MU TRACK: Marshall's 4x200-meter women's relay team broke the school record Friday at the Penn Relays at Philadelphia, Pa.

    The team turned in a time of 1 minutes, 36.86 seconds, nearly four seconds better than the previous mark of 1:40.16 set last season.
