Prep roundup: Fast start carries Hoover past Wayne

Austin Thomas clouted a two-run home run to highlight a six-run first inning as host Herbert Hoover downed Wayne 13-2 in five innings.

The Pioneers scored two runs in the top of the first for a 2-0 edge, but it was short-lived as the Huskies erupted for six in the bottom of the frame.

Thomas finished 2 for 2 with three RBIs while Sean Craze rapped out three hits and drove in four runs and Ryan Shamblin had two hits and two RBIs for the Huskies (21-1), who pounded out 15 hits. Zack Cassidy went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI for Wayne.

  • RIVERSIDE 4, WINFIELD 3: Aaron Halstead's run-scoring double down the left-field line gave the host Warriors the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Riverside's Tyler Hall then struck out the side in the top of the seventh to preserve the win. Hall fanned 12 and scattered five singles in the complete-game effort.

    Brady Wilkinson went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Warriors (9-12). Brandon Wright had two hits for the Generals and Bear Bellomy drove in a run.

  • SOUTH 8, SC 4: Jordan Braniff drove in two runs to lead visiting Parkersburg South past South Charleston. Jacob Wilcox went 3 for 3 with an RBI for the Patriots while Wes Mitchem allowed four earned runs on 10 hits in a complete-game effort.
  • Jonathan Pauley knocked in a pair of runs for the Black Eagles and Jacob Marler banged out three hits and drove in a run.

  • BUFFALO 4, WIRT COUNTY 0: Beau Whittington struck out eight in a complete-game four-hit shutout.
  • Aaron Lewis doubled in a pair of runs in the first to provide all the support Whittington would need. Michael Erwin went 2 for 3 and Dakota Briscoe doubled for the Bison (7-10).

    For Wirt County, Austin Cottrell went 2 for 3 with a double.

  • CROSS LANES 8, GRACE 6: Ethan Stepp and Chad Williams each drove in a run as host Cross Lanes Christian (7-8) held off Grace Christian.
  • Ian George went the distance, striking out 11 to earn the win.

    Chris Harmony went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs for Grace.

  • SISSONVILLE 8, MINGO CENTRAL 0: Josh Landis laced a bases-loaded triple to key a six-run fifth inning for the Indians (8-18). Zach Null went 2 for 4 for Sissonville.
  • LINCOLN CO. 4, TUG VALLEY 3: Grant Bates and Forrest Campbel each knocked in a run for Lincoln County. David Runyon knocked in three runs for the Panthers.
  • POINT 12, RIPLEY 1: Point Pleasant put up eight runs in the top of the third in the five-inning win.
  • Levi Russell went 3 for 3, including a pair of doubles, with an RBI for the Big Blacks while Evan Porter gave up one single and whiffed four. Trevor Tucker singled for the host Vikings.

  • SA 7, BLUEFIELD 2: St. Albans plated three runs in the bottom of the first en route to the home victory.
  • Joey Dodrill went 2 for 3 with three RBIs for the Red Dragons (16-8) while Bobby Grishaber smacked a solo home run.

  • VALLEY 5, MAN 3: Cody Winter struck out seven and surrendered just four hits in a complete-game effort for the visiting Greyhounds.
  • Drew Jones drove in two runs for Valley (18-5) and Todd Coleman banged out two hits. Cayce Mullins and Cody Carter each had RBIs for the Hillbillies.

  • HURRICANE 9, LOGAN 1: Zach Pate went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and J.T. Rogoszewski pitched a four-hitter to lead Hurricane to a win at Logan.
  • Riley Metz and Ace Estep added two hits apiece for the Redskins (20-3). Logan fell to 14-7.

  • CHAS. CATHOLIC 11, GREEN. WEST 1: Kiefer Hovorka allowed three hits and struck out nine in Charleston Catholic's five-inning win at Triana Field.
  • Hovorka and Connor Golden drove in three runs apiece for the Fighting Irish (15-8). Jared McClung doubled for Greenbrier West (10-7).

  • GW 5, SCOTT 3: Robbie Mounts, Clayton Anderson and John Thomas each delivered two hits apiece for George Washington.
  • Anderson and Connor Moffatt also doubled for the AAA Patriots (16-9). Cody Blevins smashed a two-run homer for the Skyhawks (13-11).

    Thursday's games

  • HURRICANE 7, HUNTINGTON 1: Alexander Dunham went 2 for 2 with a double and drove in two runs and Connor Adams fired a six-hitter to lead visiting Hurricane to victory. Austin Hensley doubled in a run for the Redskins (19-3), the No. 1 team in the Gazette's Class AAA ratings.
  • The Highlanders (16-8) hit into three double plays.

  • RAVENSWOOD 8, PARK. CATHOLIC 4: Devon Crews went 3 for 4 with a double, home run and three RBIs for the host Red Devils.
  • Mitch Davis went 3 for 4 with a triple and struck out 12 for Parkersburg Catholic.

    Softball

  • BUFFALO 5, WINFIELD 3: Chelsey Parkins struck out nine over seven innings as the host Bison held off Winfield. Catcher Amanda Christy drove in a run for Buffalo (23-4).
  • Allyson Funk and Kenna Markham each collected two hits for the Generals.

  • ST. ALBANS 7, NITRO 1: Red Dragons seniors Ali Haynes and Mariah Caudill earned their 100th career victory with a win over the Wildcats.
  • Caudill provided the offense, going 3 for 3 with a double, triple and three RBIs for St. Albans (21-4), while Alyssa Bonham tripled and drove in a pair of runs.

  • RIVERSIDE 4, NICHOLAS 3: Freshman Chelsea Diegert tripled in the winning run in the top of the eighth with two outs to propel the visiting Warriors.
  • Harley Justice singled with two outs and Diegert followed with the clutch hit. Cassady Schmidt went 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Riverside (18-14) and Destini Diegert rapped out two hits and two RBIs.

    The Grizzlies (9-13) plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.

  • HURRICANE 8, HUNTINGTON 2: Courtney Rogers went 2 for 4 with two RBIs to lead the visiting Redskins past the Highlanders.
  • Cassi Sargent pounded out two hits and knocked in a run for Hurricane (26-5), which tied the school record for wins it set last season.

    The Redskins' Addie Fullen went 3 for 4 with a double. Rachel Kinder smacked a two-run homer for Huntington.
