4 Mountaineers get free-agent deals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The NFL draft ended Saturday with no more West Virginia University players drafted beyond the three who were chosen in the first three rounds.

That doesn't mean, however, that no other Mountaineers have potential futures in the NFL. At least four signed or agreed to sign with NFL teams in the hours after the draft ended.

Center Joe Madsen and receiver J.D. Woods both agreed to go to the Pittsburgh Steelers, guard Jeff Braun to the Baltimore Ravens and running back Shawne Alston to the New Orleans Saints. Madsen, Woods and Braun announced their plans via Twitter, as did an agent for Alston.

As many as eight to 10 other former Mountaineers could be signed to contracts in the coming days.

Meanwhile, University of Charleston running back Jordan Roberts, who transferred there after a try as a walk-on at WVU, was set to sign with Kansas City Saturday night, according to published reports.

And former Capital High player Tyrone Goard, a receiver at Eastern Kentucky, was reported to be signing with Cincinnati.

On Thursday and Friday, WVU's Tavon Austin (St. Louis), Geno Smith (New York Jets) and Stedman Bailey (St. Louis) were all drafted in the first three rounds, as was Marshall's Aaron Dobson (New England).
