Alli Burdette fired a five-inning perfect game with 11 strikeouts as South Charleston blanked George Washington 8-0 in the opener of the Class AAA Region 3 Section 3 tournament.
Aayliyeh Phillips belted a grand slam as the Black Eagles stormed from behind to claim an 11-5 win over the Patriots in the nightcap to clinch the section championship. SC advances to next week's regional semifinals.
Burdette, who tossed only the second perfect game in her four-year career that also includes more than 1,000 strikeouts, went 2 for 3 with a double and RBI in the first game and fanned 11 in the second game. SC's Olivia Orcutt had pair of hits, including a home run, and three RBIs in the opener. In the second game, Madison Pauley legged out two hits and drove in two runs for the Black Eagles, who fell behind 4-0 before plating 11 runs in the last three innings.
RIPLEY 4, CAPITAL 0: Chelsey Hager and Darby Petersen combined on a two-hit shutout as the Vikings eliminated the Cougars in Class AAA Region 3 Section 4.
Ripley (20-8), which finished No. 10 in the final state sportswriters' poll, will play at Riverside (19-14) at 6 p.m. today. The two teams will also tangle at 6 p.m. Friday at Riverside. Hager fanned five while Darby whiffed two. Hager also went 2 for 3 while Kelsey Moore doubled in a run. Misty Morrison and Monet Brown each singled for Capital.
BUFFALO 9, CATHOLIC 0: Amanda Christy went 2 for 4 with four RBIs, and Ali Burdette struck out 12 to lead Buffalo (28-4) past Charleston Catholic in the Class A Region 4 Section 4 tournament at Buffalo. Emma Sovick had a double for the Irish (18-10).
ST. ALBANS 9, NITRO 1: Ali Haynes launched a grand slam during an eight-run second inning as St. Albans eliminated Nitro from the Class AAA Region 4 Section 2 tournament at St. Albans.
Whitney Jones doubled and drove in three runs for SA (25-4), which meets Logan for two games today beginning at 5 p.m. For the Wildcats, Shelby Bowen smacked a double.
SHERMAN 13, VALLEY 1: Paige Halsted went 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs and Kylie Wells struck out seven to lead Sherman (24-7) past Valley in the Class A Region 3 Section 3 tournament. Sherman advances to meet Man in the regional tournament next week.
CHAS. CATHOLIC 15, WILLIAMSTOWN 1: Rocco Wilcox (3 for 3) socked two doubles and a triple and drove in three runs to pace visiting Charleston Catholic to its seventh straight victory. Sam McKown (2 for 3) stroked a two-run homer for the Irish (19-8) and Connor Golden tossed a five-inning five-hitter with five strikeouts. Avery Goff went 2 for 3 for the Yellowjackets (19-10).
HOOVER 3, CHAPMANVILLE 0: Tristan Fields went 2 for 2 with a double and Corey Bird tossed a five-hitter to lead host Herbert Hoover (22-2). Todd Thomas drove in two runs for the Huskies. For Chapmanville (19-7), William Copley went 2 for 3.
BUFFALO 4, FAYETTEVILLE 3: Laythen Good brought in three runs with a bases-loaded double in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Bison rallied past Fayetteville.
Sophomore Beau Whittington (5-0) struck out six over six innings to remain undefeated. Jordan Fletcher added a double for Buffalo (9-11). James Criss went 3 for 3 and Trey Phares went 2 for 3 for the Pirates (15-13).
POCA SWEEPS: Lucas Marshall fired a three-hit shutout and struck out 10 as host Poca downed Mingo Central 19-0 in five innings in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader. Ryan Leighton and Matt Chandler combined on a four-hit shutout as the Dots took the opener 4-0. Matt Chandler doubled in two runs for Poca in the first game. Matthew Lester pounded out two hits for the Miners.
