VIENNA, W.Va. -- West Virginia State picked up two wins on the opening day of the West Virginia Conference softball tournament at Jackson Park, while the University of Charleston split its two games.
State overcame a 3-0 deficit en route to a 5-3 win over Alderson-Broaddus in the opening game, then shut out Shepherd 8-0.
UC lost its first game to Shepherd 7-2, then stayed alive in the double-elimination tournament with a 4-2 win over A-B.
State took the lead for good in the fifth on Mattie Best's sacrifice fly and added a run in the sixth. Anna Eggleston came in and worked 61/3 innings for the Yellow Jacket victory, scattering four hits while striking out four. Ali Neace took the loss for A-B.
The Yellow Jackets scored seven runs on three hits in the seventh, giving Pelegreen more runs than she needed to pull off the victory. Alana Weyant homered to center, driving in Mattie Best for a 2-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Sabrina Schouten was hit by a pitch and Victoria Crawford earned a walk, pushing the State margin to 4-0. Desiree Giffin's double to center cleared the bases for a 7-0 edge. The Yellow Jackets ended the game with the mercy rule when Schouten singled home a run in the bottom of the sixth. Shannon Lyons took the loss for the Rams.
State will face Fairmont State at noon today.
