VIENNA, W.Va. -- West Virginia State jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and never looked back as the Yellow Jackets earned a 15-5 six-inning mercy-rule victory over top-seeded Fairmont State Friday in the West Virginia Conference softball tournament in Vienna.
The win sends the Yellow Jackets into today's 11 a.m. championship round against Fairmont State. If State loses, a second game would be needed to determine the championship as State is unbeaten in the double-elimination tournament.
Sabrina Schouten went 3 for 3 and drove home a run for State while Mattie Best posted three hits with a double and three RBIs. Anna Eggleston gave up five runs on seven hits, striking out one and walking three for the State win.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a two-run home run from Jacqui Omichinski in the first inning. The Bobcats increased their margin to 3-0 in the second when Brenna Taylor's bunt single allowed Megan Malenstyn to score.
The Golden Eagles fought back, cutting the deficit to 4-2 with two runs in the fourth when Kendal LeFrancois blasted a two-run home run. UC threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but could not produce any runs. Omichinski earned the win for Wesleyan while UC's Morgan Aguirre took the loss.
