Prep roundup: Herbert Hoover posts two lopsided wins

Herbert Hoover scored a combined 28 runs on 23 hits as the Huskies downed visiting Mingo Central in two five-inning mercy-rule baseball contests, winning 15-2 and 13-0.

In game one, Corey Bird went 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs for Hoover (24-3) while Austin Thomas posted two hits and drove home four runs. Matt Lester had three hits for Mingo Central.

In the second contest, Hunter White had three doubles and four RBIs for the Huskies and Cody Bowen and Tristan Field each had two hits. Todd Slone went 1 for 2 for the Miners.

  • CATHOLIC 9, VALLEY 1: Nelson McKown went 2 for 4 with a double as Charleston Catholic earned a home win.
  • Andy Hoyer and Drew Cable added two hits apiece for the Fighting Irish (21-8). Cody Winter went 2 for 3 for the Greyhounds (19-11) while Todd Coleman recorded a triple and an RBI.

  • SA 4, SC 1: Peter Theodos gave up one run on four hits as St. Albans posted a road win over South Charleston. Andrew Mathews had a triple and two RBIs for the Red Dragons while Phoenix Shrewsbury and Dustin Turley both had a double. Jonathan Pauley went 2 for 3 for the Black Eagles.
  • BUFFALO 10, SHERMAN 2: The host Bison took advantage of the Tide's six errors. Garison Erwin went 3 for 4 for Buffalo (10-12) and Aaron Lewis banged out two hits. James Lester went 2 for 3 for Sherman.
  • WINFIELD 9, SPRING VALLEY 0: Brett Adkins tossed a four-hitter and Jordan Clark smashed a two-run homer and drove in three to lead the visiting Generals (12-16). Josh Bumgarner and Brian Bosley had two RBIs apiece for Winfield. Elijah Wellman doubled for the Timberwolves.

  • REGIONALS: George Washington's Kirsten White (No. 1 singles) claimed a spot in the state high school tennis tournament with an 8-0 win over Ripley's Emily Munson in the Class AAA Region 3 tournament Friday at Schoenbaum Courts.
  • Munson along with Erin Hendricks of Riverside and Carly Killmer (Shady Spring) will advance to the state tournament in No. 1 singles. Moving on in No. 2 singles are Kaitlyn White (Ripley), Erin Johnson (Greenbrier East) and Jordyn O'Dell (GW). In No. 3 singles, Marie Skaff (GW) rolled to an 8-1 win over Brooke King (Ripley), with both heading to states, while Arin Shatto (Ripley) advances at No. 4 singles with an 8-2 win over Sara Moses (GW).

    On the boys' side, Ryan Massinople (GW) downed William Robertson (Princeton) 8-3 in No. 1 singles. Massinople, Robertson, Cameron Heath (Oak Hill) and Ryan Albaugh (Shady Spring) will advance to the state tournament. In No. 2 singles, Zach Koenig (GW), Jacob Backland (Shady Spring) and Christian Heath (Oak Hill) claimed spots in states. Nick Koenig (GW) earned a win in No. 3 singles over Nick Oxendale of Oak Hill (both advance) and Thomas McIntosh (GW) claimed the No. 4 singles region title, advancing to the state tourney.

  • On the final day of the Class AAA Region 4 tournament at Ritter Park, Huntington claimed 12 singles and doubles titles, missing out on just the girls No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles.
  • On the boys side, Hurricane's Alex Clay and Jordan Chapman advanced to the state tournament, as did Luke Nelson of Winfield. For the girls, Ashley White, Vivian Yao and Lindsay Goff of Hurricane claimed their spots at states.

  • Charleston Catholic swept the boys and girls singles titles at the Class AA-A Region 4 tournament at City Park Friday in Parkersburg.
  • Making the state tournament on the girls side were Catholic's Claire Hamilton, Christina Centofanti, Danielle Sadd and Jenny Borman. Courtney Mobley of Poca will also be advancing to states. On the boys side, Mark Cassis, Scott Standish, Jad Malas and Tanner Whipkey of Catholic earned their place in the tournament, while Noah Randolph of Poca claimed his spot in the event.
