Region track meets start today

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Regional track meets begin today with four Class AAA events being held across the state, including two in the Kanawha Valley.

The top three individuals finishers in running events, shot put, long jump and discus as well as the top three relay teams from each region will automatically qualify for the state meet. The final four qualifiers for those events will be determined by the next four best times and distances from the four regions.

The top four qualifiers from each region in the high jump and pole vault will also qualify.

The Region 3 meet will be held at Laidley Field and Region 4 will be held at Hurricane with each meet starting a 4 p.m.

Region 3 teams include Capital, George Washington, South Charleston, Riverside, Greenbrier East, Oak Hill, Princeton, Ripley, Shady Spring and Woodrow Wilson. Region 4 will consist of Hurricane, Nitro, St. Albans, Winfield, Cabell Midland, Huntington, Lincoln County, Logan, Point Pleasant and Spring Valley.

All Class A meets will be held on Thursday and Class AA will be on Friday.

Class A Region 3 will be held at Laidley Field at 4 p.m. Thursday with Fayetteville, Greenbrier West, Meadow Bridge, Midland Trail, Richwood, Sherman, Van, Valley and Tug Valley competing.

Buffalo and Charleston Catholic will compete in Region 4, which will start at 5 p.m. at Parkersburg High School. Calhoun County, Doddridge County, Gilmer County, Hannan, Parkersburg Catholic, Wahama, Williamstown and Wirt County will round out the field.

On Friday, both Class AA Region 3 and Region 4 will be held at Laidley Field, with Region 3 starting at 10 a.m. and Region 4 at 4 p.m.

The Region 3 field will consist of Bluefield, Independence, James Monroe, Liberty Raleigh, Moutn View, PikeView, River View, Summers County, Westside and Wyoming East.

Sissonville, Poca and Herbert Hoover will compete in the Region 4 meet along with Chapmanville, Clay County, Mingo Central, Nicholas County, Scott, Tolsia and Wayne.
