Roundup: O'Dell wins Mid-Amateur
Hurricane's Sam O'Dell defeated Huntington's Pat Carter 3 and 2 in the finals of the West Virginia Mid-Amateur Championship held at Berry Hills Country Club on Sunday.
O'Dell, the No. 12 seed, defeated No. 9 Ian Patrick of Huntington 3 and 2 earlier in the day while No. 2 Carter knocked off No. 30 Jeff Harper of Parkersburg 6 and 4 to complete the semifinals.
It was the second Mid-Amateur championship for O'Dell, who also defeated Carter at The Raven in 2011.
STATE SOFTBALL: The West Virginia State softball team was eliminated from the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional on Sunday after falling 6-2 to Bloomsburg in the team's second game of the day.
The Yellow Jackets held off elimination early with an 8-2 win over Shippensburg. Desiree Giffin led State in that game, going 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs.
Poppy Ramey drove in a pair of runs in the seventh inning of the second game, but the rally was too little, too late for State.
The Yellow Jackets finish the season with a 42-14 record.
POWER WINS: Dilson Herrera had three hits with a home run and two RBIs as the West Virginia Power took a 6-2 win at Lexington on Sunday, salvaging a four-game split and climbing back to .500 at 18-18.
Josh Bell added a pair of hits for the Power, while Stetson Allie drove in a pair of runs.
That was plenty for starter Tyler Glasnow (3-0) who struck out nine while yielding just one run on two hits and two walks in five innings.
Terrance Gore and Ethan Chapman each had two-hit efforts for Lexington (17-19).
The Power will travel to Hickory for a three-game series beginning at 6 p.m. tonight before returning home for four against Lexington starting on Thursday.
MU BASEBALL: Jack Reinheimer hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth to drive in the winning run as East Carolina squeaked past Marshall 4-3 on Sunday at Epling Stadium in Beckley.
Isaac Ballou had a pair of hits and an RBI while Gray Stafford went 2 for 4 with a triple and a pair of runs scored to lead the Thundering Herd (19-31 overall, 6-15 Conference USA).
Marshall will take on West Virginia at Beckley on Tuesday.
