SC adding Vencill as boys assistant coach
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- John Vencill, a former longtime coach at Capital, has been added to the boys basketball staff at South Charleston.
He recorded 224 wins as head boys basketball coach at Capital and one of its predecessors, Charleston High, which closed in 1989. Vencill, 68, also served as an assistant coach at Capital in boys and girls basketball and football and at Charleston High in football and boys basketball.
Vencill, who joins the staff of SC coach Vic Herbert, said it's been about 10 years since he coached basketball. He still teaches calculus and math courses at Capital.
"I never really gave it a second thought,'' Vencill said of returning to the bench. "Coach Herbert called me one day and said, 'I'd like to pick your brain.' I'd coached against him when he was at Logan, so I thought it was about that. I realized about five minutes into our talk, it was more than that.
"I prayed about it and I thought about it and I said, 'I like kids,' and it's a chance for me to get back into it and see how it goes.''
