Fourteen golfers qualified for the West Virginia Open Friday at the Golf Club of West Virginia in Waverly.
Williamstown's Austin Root topped the 50-man field with a 1-under-par 69, while his father, Warren Root, qualified with a 1-over 71. Camden Moore of Spencer, the youngest man in the field, finished in second with a score of 70.
Parkersburg's Josh Goodnight, Wheeling's Kyle Wensel and Phillip Butcher of Chesapeake, Ohio, along with Warren Root, each finished with a 71. Charleston's Carl Roncaglione and Kris Webster qualified with 72s, as did Vienna's Chris Barlament and Steve Hussey of Washington.
Steven Hunter from Webster Springs, Steve Ross from Huntington and Parkersburg's Thad Tofaute each qualified with a 73. Vince Guise from Parkersburg broke a six-man tie to secure the final qualifying spot on the fifth playoff hole.
Vienna's Austin Davis and Charleston's Brian Khoury earned alternate positions for the Open. The final qualifier will be Monday at Edgewood Country Club.
YOUTH BASKETBALL: The University of Charleston will host a boys and girls basketball camp Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The camp is for ages 8-18 and will cost $140. Special guest camp counselors include former WVU point guard Joe Mazzulla and former West Virginia Conference player of the year P.J. Reyes. WVU SPORTS: West Virginia University rising senior Chance Cover finished first in the Class A men's 50-meter rifle prone competition at the USA Shooting National Championships for Rifle and Pistol Thursday in Fort Benning, Ga.
Cover finished first in his class and 36th overall with a two-day aggregate score of 1,231. Sophomore-to-be Garrett Spurgeon finished 23rd overall with a score of 1,236.2 and rising junior Thomas Kyanko shot 1,224, finishing 47th overall. Former Mountaineer Eric Uptagrafft, a two-time Olympian for the United States, placed fourth overall with an aggregate score of 1,250.8.
