Roundup: St. Marys' Drazba honored
St. Marys High School standout Maggie Drazba was named Gatorade West Virginia Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year on Wednesday.
A two-time Gatorade state Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year, the 5-foot-1 senior won three individual state championships at the Class A state track meet this spring and led the Blue Devils to a fifth-place finish as a team. Drazba won the 800 in 2:21.42, the 1,600 in 5:03.53 and the 3,200 in 10:31.83.
She also ranked in the top 100 nationally in the 1,600 and 3,200 this spring. Drazba has signed a national letter of intent to compete in track and field on an athletic scholarship at West Virginia University this fall.
POWER MOVES: West Virginia Power left-handed pitcher Orlando Castro and infielder Stetson Allie were promoted to the Bradenton (Fla.) Marauders on Wednesday.
Castro finished the first half of the season with a 7-4 record and a 1.93 earned run average. Allie concluded the first half with 17 home runs, a .324 batting average and 79 hits. Right-handed pitchers Luis Heredia and Clario Perez were promoted from Jamestown to the Power.
SHEPHERD SPORTS: Shepherd University director of athletics B.J. Pumroy announced Wednesday that Melanie Ford was named assistant director of athletics and that Antoinette "Toni" West was named head women's basketball coach, effective July 1.
FOOTBALL CAMP: Former Marshall player Mark Mason will direct a charitable football camp at Laidley Field from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 29. The camp is for ages 6-16 and will feature guest speakers, instruction of offensive and defensive techniques, as well as counseling service to promote staying in school, life success and avoiding drugs. Donations will be taken to fund the use of the stadium, lunches, beverages, shirts, and trophies for the campers and can be made payable to Mark Mason Youth Football Camp.
