St. Albans Summer Shootout tips off today

The St. Albans High School Summer Shootout begins its two-day run today.

The girls basketball event will feature 44 teams, including the state's three reigning champions, from 39 high schools across West Virginia taking part in a round-robin format beginning at 9 a.m. today and Wednesday at four locations (see Page 2B for schedule.)

Parkersburg South, the Class AAA state titlist, will match up today with St. Joseph, the five-time Class A champion. The contest will also feature two of the state's top players in South sophomore guard Taryn McCutcheon, who earned all-state first-team honors after last season, and Fighting Irish senior guard Mychal Johnson, who captained the Class A first team and has committed to Notre Dame.

The AA field features state champ Bridgeport and runner-up Westside, which won it all in 2012. Renegades 6-foot junior center Hope Lester, who averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds last season as a first-team all-state selection, has committed to Marshall.

The Kanawha Valley contingent features St. Albans, Nitro, Capital, George Washington, Sissonville, Charleston Catholic, Poca, Herbert Hoover, Hurricane, Winfield, South Charleston and Riverside.

Other schools competing include AAA Huntington, Parkersburg and Preston; AA Clay County, North Marion, Fairmont Senior, Scott and Tolsia and Class A squads Parkersburg Catholic, Pocahontas County and Gilmer County. Ironton (Ohio) will also attend.

There will be 43 games today and 45 Wednesday at the St. Albans High School main and auxiliary gyms, the Active Sports Complex, which is two blocks east of the high school, and McKinley Middle School.

Each team plays three games per day. The games will be two 18-minute halves with the first half operating with a running clock, only stopping in the final two minutes of the second half.

Admission is $3 each day and is good for all the games that particular day at all four locations.
