Roundup: Marshall adds assistant swimming/diving coach

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Marshall University swimming and diving head coach Bill Tramel announced Thursday the hiring of Ian Walsh as an assistant coach.

Walsh comes to Huntington from Albright College in Reading, Pa., where he served as head assistant coach and helped the men's and women's programs win Middle Atlantic Conference championships.

As a student-athlete, Walsh was the 2009 Atlantic 10 championship in the 100-meter breaststroke while representing Duquesne University. He set school records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and was a member of the Duquesne school-record relay teams in the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay.

  • YOUTH SOCCER: The University of Charleston soccer teams are still accepting registration for next week's half-day soccer camps for boys and girls age 4-17. The camp takes place July 15-19 from 8 a.m.-noon at Schoenbaum Stadium. The cost is $200 and includes a T-shirt for all campers.

  • CAPITAL CITY CHALLENGE: Free clinics to help participants in this year's fourth annual Capital City Challenge will be held prior to the race, which will be run on Sept. 14.

    The race is a multi-event competition in Charleston that includes a 4.2-mile run, a 4.2-mile paddle in the Kanawha River  and a 16.8-mile bike ride with two loops between Magic Island and Daniel Boone Park.

    On July 25, a kayak clinic will be held at Magic Island; on Aug. 1, a cycling clinic will be held at John's Cyclery in St. Albans' and on Aug. 8, a running/training session will be held at Magic Island. Each program will begin at 6 p.m. and will last around one hour.
