BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- It might be a new conference, but the name atop the Mountain East's preseason football poll is a familiar one.
Shepherd was a rather overwhelming choice to win the conference in a poll of the new league's coaches. The Rams received eight of the 11 first-place votes. The University of Charleston received two votes and finished second, while Urbana (Ohio) got the other first-place vote and finished sixth in the poll.
Concord, Glenville and West Liberty were behind Charleston in the voting, and following Urbana were Fairmont, Notre Dame (Ohio) College, Virginia-Wise, West Virginia State and West Virginia Wesleyan.
The new league, formed primarily of former West Virginia Conference members, held its first football media day Tuesday at the conference's new home in Bridgeport.
Shepherd has eight starters returning on both offense and defense from a team that was 8-3 last season and played in the NCAA Division II playoffs.
