West Virginia scored a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings as the Power outlasted Hickory 5-3 Friday in a South Atlantic League contest before 5,157 at Appalachian Power Park.
Francisco Diaz paced West Virginia (34-19), going 2 for 3 with a double and a pair of RBIs. Bryton Trepagnier (5-4) earned the win in relief despite allowing three runs on three hits over two innings. Jhondaniel Medina notched his eighth save.
Nick Williams led the Crawdads' attack, going 2 for 4 with a double, and Joey Gallo blasted a solo home run in the seventh. Starter Frank Lopez was tagged with the loss for Hickory (30-24), giving up five runs (four earned) in five innings.
West Virginia remains in first place of the Northern Division with a one-half game lead over the Hagerstown Suns, who bested Asheville 5-3 Friday.
The Power continues its four-game series with Hickory tonight at 7:05. Clay Holmes (5-5) will strart for West Virginia, facing Andrew Falkner (4-3).
The Power has placed Eric Wood on the disabled list, and promoted Francisco Aponte from the Pittsburgh Pirates' short-season team in Jamestown, Pa.
