Compliance issue benches Herd's Sane for Canada tour

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Junior-college transfer Cheikh Sane is not playing on Marshall's five-game tour of Canada because of a compliance issue, MU officials said Saturday night.

"On Thursday evening, our compliance office informed us of a certification issue regarding Cheikh," said MU coach Tom Herrion. "It is not an eligibility issue, rather it deals with the fact that he is an international student. As a result of this, Cheikh will not be allowed to participate in the five games on the tour.

"We are all disappointed with this news, especially Cheikh. He has worked very hard throughout the summer, including our 10 days of practice. We are confident that this will have no impact on his future once all of the documents and paperwork are completely filed."

The Thundering Herd began the trip Friday night with a 99-54 rout of Algoma College of Windsor, Ont. The Herd led 50-20 at halftime and 85-38 after three quarters (four 10-minute quarters are used).

Ryan Taylor, a non-qualifier last year, led with 20 points and 10 rebounds. JP Kambola, playing 28 minutes with the absence of Sane and Yous Mbao (injury), had eight points, five blocks and three rebounds.

Kareem Canty, also a non-qualifier last season, scored 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, and TyQuane Goard had 11 points.

Marshall improved to 2-0 on its tour Saturday as Canty netted 21 points in an 84-80 victory over the Windsor (Ont.) Lancers 84-80.

Taylor produced a double-double for the Herd with 20 points and 11 boards, while Elijah Pittman scored 17.

Lien Phillip paced Windsor with 28 points and nine rebounds.
