WVU's Sims named to Campbell watch list
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia University's Charles Sims was among 35 players named Thursday to the inaugural Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list.
The award, which is sponsored by the Tyler, Texas, Chamber of Commerce, will go to the top offensive player in Division I who was born in Texas or graduated from a high school in Texas or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.
Sims, a 6-foot, 213-pound transfer from Houston, rushed for 2,370 yards and averaged 6.2 yards per carry, scoring 29 touchdowns in three seasons for the Cougars. He also caught 158 passes for 1,707 yards and eight TDs. The Houston, Texas, resident was voted preseason All-Big 12 newcomer of the year this season.
The list will be narrowed to 16 semifinalists in November and then four finalists in December, with the winner announced in December. Campbell was the University of Texas' first Heisman Trophy winner and is a Pro Football Hall of Fame member.
