CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The beauty of the opening weekend of high school football this year is that it's spread over three days, at least for Kanawha Valley teams.
That enables me to attend three different games involving teams in all three classifications, perhaps providing an early look at some playoff contenders across the board.
Here's a brief summary of what I'll be watching in Week 1. All three games kick off at 7:30 p.m.:
The Patriots carry the Kanawha Valley's longest current playoff streak at six straight seasons and both teams are used to being near the top, as each has made a pair of appearances at the Class AAA Super Six title game in Wheeling over the previous five years. SC, of course, won back-to-back state championships in 2008-09.
GW has won the last three games of the series, including 36-24 last season. The teams have met every year since 1999, with the Patriots leading 8-6 over that stretch.
