LEWISBURG, W.Va. -- More than 200 people attended a memorial service for state golfing legend William C. Campbell Tuesday at The Old Stone Presbyterian Church, with Rev. J. Dexter Taylor officiating.
West Virginia Golf Association Executive Director Ken Tackett said there was "great representation, folks from all over the country came to pay their last respects" to Campbell, a record-holding 15-time West Virginia Amateur champion and 1964 U.S. Amateur champion, who died Aug. 30 at age 90.
"It was exactly what you'd think a funeral for Mr. Campbell should be," Tackett said.
Understated. Graceful. Just perfect.
"What do you say about a true gentleman in the game of golf. He's the epitome of what our game projects."
