Stroke-play medalist Jim Grimmett was quickly eliminated by Morgantown's Eric Fairbanks in the match play round of 16 in the Championship Division of the West Virginia Senior Amateur Tuesday at the Resort at Glade Springs.
Defending champion Steve Fox of Huntington will compete in today's semifinals against Spencer's Rick Moore. In the other semifinal, past champion Harold Payne will compete against 2012 Senior Amateur stroke-play medalist Steve Jackson of Williamstown.
Shady Spring's Spot Leach and Huntington's Charlie Stone will be in the final match in the Gold division, while Morgantown's Dick Bolen and Beckley's Tom Brown will be in the final Silver division match. (For results, see Page 2B.)
MARSHALL SOCCER: Zach Hunter and Ben Holt scored second-half goals as the Marshall men's team (2-4-1) defeated VMI 2-0 for its second straight victory at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
MARSHALL GOLF: For the first time in 13 years, the Marshall men's golf team finished first overall, winning the 13th annual John Piper Intercollegiate in Bowling Green, Ohio, Tuesday.
Sophomore Logan Lagodich led the way for the Thundering Herd with a team-low three-round score of 215. The squad shot a 1-over-par 289 in the final round of the tournament to finish with a three-stroke advantage for a total of 866.
