WISE, Va. - The University of Charleston opened up a 24-9 halftime lead over Virginia-Wise and never trailed en route to a 38-15 Mountain East Conference victory Saturday.
The Golden Eagles (1-2, 1-0 MEC) amassed 227 yards on the ground led by Leighton Settle, who gained 128 yards on 17 carries.
UC struck on its first possession as C.J. Stallworth capped off a nine-play, 73-yard scoring drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. Two plays into Wise's first drive, UC's Torie Wagner picked off Ty Ryans' pass and raced 11 yards for a score.
The Cavs (0-3, 0-2) responded with an 11-play, 67-yard scoring drive and Chris Grady finished it off with a 1-yard touchdown run, but Charleston responded with a six-play, 38-yard drive that culminated with a 42-yard field goal by Puma Nuredini to push the lead to 17-6.
On its next possession, UC marched 63 yards with Maurice Leak finishing off the drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Justin Lawrence. The Cavs added a field goal late in the first half to cut UC's lead to 24-9.
The Eagles outscored the Cavs 14-0 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. Bam Harrison scored on a 25-yard interception return and Leak scored on a 1-yard sneak.
Shepherd (3-0, 2-0) was led by junior quarterback Trae Tinsman, who completed 19 of 28 passes for 267 yards and a pair of scores. J.D. Mendenhall connected on 27 of 54 passes for 349 yards and three touchdowns for Urbana (1-2, 1-1).
