"I think we did some things well,'' said Notre Dame coach Adam Howard, "but we just didn't execute when it mattered.''
Notre Dame, which started its football program in 2009, has 2,100 students and, because it fields 24 varsity sports, felt compelled to leave the Division II Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference last year and become a charter member of the Mountain East.
"There was only one reason [for joining the MEC], and that's that the GLIAC only accepted us in four or five sports,'' said Howard. "But we had 24 intercollegiate sports last year. In the Mountain East, we're a full member.''
Notre Dame quarterback Ray Russ hit on 36 of 56 passes for 345 yards and three touchdowns and an interception. Pedro Powell rushed 32 times for 200 yards.
