Area roundup: GW boys, Winfield and Catholic girls top soccer rankings

 CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- George Washington remained No. 1 in Class AAA boys while Winfield and Charleston Catholic were still on top in AAA and AA-A girls, respectively, Tuesday in the state coaches association rankings. Linsly vaulted to No. 1 in AA-A boys.

GW was No. 1 in AAA boys followed by Parkersburg, Morgantown, Wheeling Park and Oak Hill to round out the top five. In AA-A boys, Linsly earned the top spot ahead of No. 2 Charleston Catholic with No. 3 East Fairmont, No. 4 Sissonville and No. 5 Parkersburg Catholic.

On the girls side, Winfield was No. 1 in AAA followed by Hurricane, Morgantown, George Washington and Wheeling Park. In AA-A, Charleston Catholic was at the top followed by No. 2 Sissonville, No. 3 Fairmont Senior, No. 4 Bridgeport and No. 5 Grafton. (See Page 2B for rankings.)

  • WVU SOCCERThe West Virginia University women's team climbed eight spots to No. 10 in this week's Soccer America poll following two Big 12 road wins. The Mountaineers beat Oklahoma State and snapped then-No. 9 Baylor's 31-match unbeaten streak. WVU is the highest-ranked Big 12 team in this week's poll. The Bears check in at No. 13 and Texas Tech is ranked No. 16.

  • WVU's women's team swept the Big 12 soccer weekly awards for games played Sept. 27-30. Junior forward Kate Schwindel was named the Big 12 offensive player of the week, senior goalkeeper Sara Keane was named the defensive player of the week and freshman defender Kadeisha Buchanan was named the Big 12 newcomer of the week.

  • WVSU SPORTS: The West Virginia State men's basketball team will host a four-man golf scramble at Little Creek Country Club Friday. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. and is $50 per player.
