Roundup: Duty wins Senior Golf Series event at Riverside

Hurricane's John Duty Sr. won his third event, all coming this month, in the West Virginia Senior Golf Series Wednesday at Riverside Golf Club.

Duty shot a 74 while St. Albans' Al Estepp and Apple Grove's Phil Mayes both shot 76.

Mineral Wells' Jim Mason won the Silver Division, shooting a 75, and Charlie Stone of Huntington won the Gold Division, also posting a 75.

  • WVU SPORTS: The West Virginia University rifle team moved up one spot to No. 4 in this week's College Rifle Coaches poll. The Mountaineers shot 4,657 in their season-opening win over Ohio State on Oct. 5 at the WVU Rifle Range.

  • HOOVER HALL: Herbert Hoover High School Athletic Hall of Fame will induct 10 new members during its fourth annual induction ceremony on Oct. 10.

    Rusty Clark, Cary Friel, Charlie Gatson, Greg Keenan, Sheena Smithers, John Welch, Matt Wehrle, Steve Stoffel Sr., Gerald Huey Newhouse and Kirk Rector will be the honorees.

    Ceremonies begin at 6 p.m. and the evening will feature a social hour followed by induction of the honorees.

    The Hall of Fame class will also be recognized at halftime of the Herbert Hoover-Mingo Central football game on Nov. 1. Tickets for both events may be purchased at the gate or by contacting the school.

  • KOHL'S CUP: The West Virginia Soccer Association is accepting registrations for teams to compete in the 2013 Kohl's Cup Nov. 16-17 at the Barboursville Soccer Complex.

    Under-9 through under-14 boys, girls and coed recreation teams will be accepted for this tournament. The cost is $225 per team. The registration deadline is Oct. 20. For more information, visit www.wvsoccer.net or contact your local club register.

  • HURRICANE 7, POINT PLEASANT 1: Chris Smith, Guillermo Ugarte and Loran Meadows each scored two goals as the Class AAA No. 15 host Redskins down the Black Knights. Connor Fowler added a goal for Hurricane (11-6-3) and Jesse Bailes scored for Point (0-14).
