Marshall's Cato wins Conference USA honor
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Quarterback Rakeem Cato was named Conference USA's offensive player of the week Monday, the first Thundering Herd player so honored this fall.
Cato threw for five touchdowns in a 61-13 rout of Southern Mississippi, one behind the school record set by Chad Pennington and tied by Byron Leftwich. He completed 21 of 28 passes for 262 yards with no interceptions.
The performance puts Cato second in C-USA passer efficiency rating, with his 142.5 trailing the 152.8 of East Carolina's Shane Carden. Carden and Cato are also 1-2 in passing yardage, with averages of 323.6 and 258.6, respectively, and total yardage, 326.1-286.0.
The junior from Miami has thrown for 2,288 yards and a league-high 20 TDs, giving him career numbers of 8,329 yards and 72 TDs - fourth and third, respectively, on MU's all-time lists.
