West Virginia's women's soccer team swept the top awards as the Big 12 named its players of the year, coach of the year and all-conference awards Monday.
The Mountaineers were well rewarded for their 13-3-2 season. Senior Frances Silva was named Offensive Player of the Year for her league-leading 12 goals, 13 assists and 37 points. Freshman Kadeisha Buchanan was named Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year.
Both players were named to the All-Big 12 first team, and Buchanan named the All-Newcomer Team. Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown was named Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
WVU also had two players on the first unit, freshman midfielder Ashley Lawrence and junior forward Kate Schwindel. Sophomore midfielder Amanda Hill made the second unit.
The All-Newcomer Team also included Lawrence and defender Carly Black, also a freshman.
MU SOCCER WINS: Chelsea Stalter scored her first two career goals and Morgan Cain iced the match as Marshall's women's team scored its first-ever postseason win, 3-1 over host Rice in the Conference USA tournament.
Stalter put the Herd (10-6-3) up in the 10th minute off an assist from Erin Simmons, but the Owls (7-8-3) evened it up in the 61st minute. Two minutes later, Stalter struck again, and Cain scored off a Lizzy Lemons pass in the 77th.
Marshall moves to the quarterfinals, taking on East Division top seed Charlotte.
