Area roundup: Bluefield (Va.) defeats WVU Tech 97-62

Six different Bluefield (Va.) players tallied double-digit scoring totals in a 97-62 win over WVU Tech in the Ramey Car Classic in Bluefield, Va.

Eric Dukes paced Bluefield (5-2) with 18 points, followed by Andrew Wilson's 14. The Golden Bears (8-6) were led by Jauries Thomas' game-high 22 points, while Jaren Marino added 11 points.

  • STATE WOMEN WIN: Senior India Taste hit four big free throws in the closing seconds as the West Virginia State women's basketball team posted a 78-75 Mountain East Conference win Saturday at Fairmont State.
  • Taste finished with 19 points for the Yellow Jackets (6-2, 3-1) while Lexy Carson added 16 and Shealyn Shafer contributed 15.

  • TECH WOMEN ROUTED: Seven players reached double figures as the University of Pikeville women's team routed visiting WVU Tech 93-59 Saturday in Pikeville, Ky.
  • Patrice Tonge led Pikeville (3-5) with 16 points and six rebounds. Nia Nolan led all scorers with 17 points for the Golden Bears (2-8), while Cheyanna Lusk had a game-high 10 rebounds and four points.

  • STATE MEN LOSE: Stevie Browning netted 23 points as Fairmont State downed visiting West Virginia State.
  • Thomas Wimbush and Shammgod Wells each contributed 21 points for the Falcons (6-2, 2-2 MEC). The Yellow Jackets (1-4, 0-4) were paced by Angelo Sirianni's 21 points.

  • WVU SPORTS: The WVU women's basketball team made 11 3-pointers en route to a 94-47 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson Saturday in Morgantown. Senior guard Taylor Palmer led the Mountaineers (7-1) with a game-high 25 points and center Asya Bussie chipped in with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Brianna Thomas led the Knights with 23 points.

  • The WVU wrestling team beat Drexel 25-8, VMI 38-3, and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 27-3 Saturday at the Hoosier Duals in Bloomington, Ind. Corey Stainbrook (125), Colin Johnson (141) and Mike Morales (149) all went 3-0 on the day for WVU (6-2).
