Area roundup: Pairings set for Chick-fil-A/SCHS hoops event
A pair of Ohio boys basketball teams come to the Kanawha Valley for the Chick-fil-A/SCHS Basketball Classic set for Dec. 27-28 at the South Charleston Community Center.
Cincinnati Woodward and St. Clairsville will compete in the two-day, five-game event.
On the opening night, the girls teams from St. Albans and South Charleston tip off things at 5 p.m., followed by Wyoming East and Woodward boys at 7 and Point Pleasant against SC boys at approximately 8:45.
The next evening features a pair of boys games, as St. Clairsville (21-3 last season) is paired with Point Pleasant at 5:15 and SC tangles with Woodward at 7.
STATE AT BLUEFIELD: The West Virginia State men's basketball team will attempt to follow up Sunday's victory over Davis & Elkins with another win as the Yellow Jackets go on the road against Bluefield State at 6 tonight in Bluefield.
The Jackets (2-4, 0-4 Mountain East Conference) are led by senior guard Anton Hutchins (22 points, 6.0 rebounds per game), sophomore Dominic Phillips (16 points per game.) and senior Bo King, who scored 14 points in his return to action Sunday. The Blues (4-9) will lean on sophomore guard Shakir Dunning (22 points per game) and senior guard Treon Claiborne (15.8 points, 7.4 rebounds per game).
A-B SOCCER: Alderson-Broaddus men's soccer coach Dan Kelly has been reassigned to the athletic department after stepping down from his position last week. The native of England guided A-B to eight West Virginia Conference tournament appearances during his 14 seasons with the Battlers and was named WVC coach of the year in 2008. The Battlers finished the 2013 season with a 3-13 record.
