The 23rd annual HYCAT December High School Invitational Swim Meet will be held today in the University of Charleston's natatorium.
Meet Director Greg Olson expects approximately 125 swimmers from Charleston Catholic, South Charleston, Capital, Huntington, Nitro and Robert C. Byrd high schools. Based on submitted times, Charleston Catholic girls' team is the favorite for the girls team title, while Capital and Charleston Catholic are favorites to win the boys and combined team titles.
The meet is being hosted by Charleston Catholic, with a 1:15 p.m. start time.
STATE WOMEN LOSE: Tenicia Spence erupted for 34 points as Wilmington (Del.) rolled to a 73-66 win over the West Virginia State women's basketball team Friday in the first round of the Toys For Tots Holiday Tournament in Institute.
Jordan Brock paced the Yellow Jackets (6-3) with 18 points, while Shealyn Shafer posted a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds. State will face the winner of Ursuline and St. Augustine today at a yet to be determined time.
DLESK DIES: Sylvan James "Dick" Dlesk, whose name adorns West Virginia University's soccer stadium, died Wednesday in Wheeling Hospital, the Intelligencer newspaper reported. He was 75.
The stadium was renamed in honor of the university benefactor in 2004.
Friends will be received on from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Kepner Funeral Home in Wheeling. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.
