Area roundup: State men edged by Notre Dame College 103-99

West Virginia State's Anton Hutchins posted 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Yellow Jackets men's basketball team lost 103-99 to Notre Dame College Saturday in a game moved to South Euclid, Ohio, due to the water crisis.

Lawrence DeArmond exploded for 28 points for the Falcons (5-8, 3-4 Mountain East Conference) while Tyree Gaitner netted 26. Dominic Phillips had a team-high 20 points for the Yellow Jackets (5-6, 2-6 MEC) and Bo King contributed 17 points.

  • CHARLESTON 76, URBANA 61: Charleston forced 16 turnovers and committed just nine of its own as the visiting Golden Eagles breezed past winless Urbana on the road.
  • Aleksander Kesic led UC (8-4, 5-3) with 18 points while former George Washington standout Tino diTrapano added 17. Fred Simpson chipped in with 12 points off the bench and Xavier Humphreys registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

    Casey Baker scored 17 points to lead the Blue Knights (0-12, 0-8) and Derrick Sanderfer Jr. tallied 11 off the bench.

    MEC women

  • STATE 80, NOTRE DAME 74: West Virginia State led by as many as 20 points in the second half but needed to withstand a rally from Notre Dame College to take a win Saturday in Institute.
  • Asia Greenleaf produced 22 points and 14 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets (10-4, 6-2 MEC), while Lexy Carson added 18 points and 10 assists. Notre Dame (8-3, 5-2) was led by Martha Nagbe with 27 points.

  • URBANA 75, UC 61: Charleston committed 18 turnovers as Urbana posted a win at the Grimes Center in Urbana, Ohio.
  • DeVonyea Johnson recorded 20 points for the Blue Knights (10-2, 7-1 MEC), while Kennedy Boggs chipped in 16 points. Chyress Lockhart paced the Golden Eagles (8-4, 4-4) with 13 points and LeAnne Ross had 12.

  • HERD WOMEN LOSE: UAB defeated Marshall 63-57 in women's basketball Saturday afternoon at the Cam Henderson Center, leaving the Thundering Herd winless in Conference USA.

    Marshall cut the lead to three with less than two minutes to play, but the Blazers hit four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. Junior AJ Johnson led the Herd (7-8, 0-2) with 15 points, all on five 3-pointers, and Leah Scott scored 12. Karisa Chapman led UAB (9-6, 1-1) with 25 points and 11 rebounds.

  • MARSHALL TRACK: Marshall's Loren Dyer captured the triple jump with a leap of 11.78 meters to lead the Herd indoor track and field team Friday at the Ohio State Buckeye Classic. MU's Catika Slay recorded a third-place finish in the long jump (5.44 meters) and also tied for fourth in the high jump at 1.53 meters.

  • WVU SWIMMING: The WVU men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to the University of Pittsburgh Saturday in the annual Backyard Brawl at the WVU Natatorium. The women's team lost 179-119, while the Panther's edged the men's team 161-139.
