Girls roundup: Summers outlasts Bluefield in 4 OTs

Summers County and Bluefield went four overtimes Tuesday night in girls high school basketball, in a game long enough to delay a subsequent boys game by an hour.

When the final, final, final buzzer sounded, the visiting Bobcats remained undefeated with a 79-73 victory over the Beavers, in a game not short on dramatics.

"It was pretty wild," said Summers coach Wayne Ryan. "It's been so wild, I've been trying to figure it out while I'm sitting here."

With fans filing in for the Wyoming East-Bluefield boys game, Summers (9-0) stayed alive when Avery Pivont hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. Bluefield's Destiny Simms returned the favor in the third overtime with a buzzer-beating fall-away shot.

Finally, the Bobcats took over in the fourth OT with an inside basket by Abby Taylor and a jumper in the lane by Brandy Morrison. Brittney Justice, who went 17 of 18 from the foul line, put the game away.

Justice, a freshman, played at point guard after older sister Whittney fouled out with six minutes left in the fourth quarter. Brittney Justice finished with 25 points, hitting all eight free throws in the four overtimes.
