Area college basketball: Tech men turn the tables on Campbellsville

The WVU Tech men's basketball team avenged an 18-point loss from earlier in the season as it took down Campbellsville 79-68  Saturday afternoon at the Baisi Athletic Center in Montgomery.

The Golden Bears (13-9) were led by Jaren Marino's game-high 23 points. Stephen Coles recorded 17 points and 10 rebounds for Tech and senior Brandon Burgraff nailed three 3-pointers to finish with 16 points.

Eric Gaines led the Tigers (7-14) with 15 points.

  • Charleston 79, Fairmont State 66: Visiting Charleston shot over 50 percent (26 for 50) and held a 39-31 rebounding advantage to earn its seventh straight win.
  • Aleksander Kesic led four double-digit scorers with 20 points and 12 rebounds for UC (12-4 overall, 9-3 Mountain East Conference), followed by Denzel Douglas (18 points), Tino diTrapano (14), and Fred Simpson (12).

    Thomas Wimbush led the Falcons (11-6, 6-5) with 17 points, Stevie Browning tossed in 14 and Brendan Cooper scored 13.

  • Shepherd 93, West Virginia State 92: Marcus Pilgrim knocked down a pair of free throws with just two seconds left as host Shepherd dealt West Virginia State a heartbreaking loss.
  • Bo King scored a game-high 28 points for the Yellow Jackets (7-8, 4-8), including a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to give State a one-point lead. Anton Hutchins scored 16 for State followed by Steven Wing with 13, Juan Johnson with 12 and Dominic Phillips with 10.

    Brantly Osborne paced the Rams (14-4, 9-3) with 22 points while Pilgrim (17), Austin Cunningham (15), Morgan McDonald (12 points, 12 rebounds), and Naim Muhammed (10) each finished in double figures.

    MEC women

  • West Virginia State 85, Shepherd 80: Lexy Carson poured in a game-high 26 points and West Virginia State coach Dave Smith picked up his 600th career victory in comeback fashion on the road.
  • State (12-6, 8-4) trailed by 12 with 5:18 remaining but ended on a 21-4 run to outlast the Rams (2-14, 2-10). Jordan Brock chipped in 20 points for the Jackets and Shalyn Shafer contributed 13 points and 13 rebounds.

    Gabby Flinchum had 21 points and nine rebounds to lead Shepherd.

  • Fairmont State 80, Charleston 62: Former Scott standout Makenzie White scored a team-high 19 points as the Falcons won at home.
  • Deidra Combs and Hailey Garrett added 15 points apiece for the Falcons (9-5, 7-4) as Fairmont moved ahead of UC in the MEC standings for fourth place. Chryess Lockhart's 15 points paced the Golden Eagles (11-5, 7-5) and Kiara Johnson scored 10.
