Huntington Invitational tips off today at Big Sandy Superstore Arena
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The high-flying Huntington Invitational starts small today, rolling out five bite-size appetizers a day before some beefy prep school basketball.
The program tips off at 3 p.m. at Big Sandy Superstore Arena, with three middle school games and two high school bouts on tap. All involve teams in the immediate Huntington area. (See full schedule, Page 2B.)
The second of the four-game Thursday slate involves Teays Valley Christian, taking on Coal Grove, Ohio. But two games later, the big-time action begins at about 8:15 with Huntington St. Joseph Prep taking on Trent Internationale School from Texas.
At about 8 p.m. Friday, St. Joseph Prep battles Kennedy Charter Public School of Charlotte, N.C.
That is the fifth of six games Friday, followed by an eight-game, all-high school slate Saturday. St. Joseph Prep does not play that day, but several other out-of-town teams are scheduled to play, such as Wesley Christian School of Allen, Ky., and Mentor, Ohio, as well as Trent and Kennedy.
Arlington Country Day of Jacksonville, Fla, pulled out because its coach is having heart surgery. St. Joseph Prep coach Rob Fulford said he is looking for a team to step into the 7:15 p.m. game Saturday against Mentor.
Among games involving traditional public schools, the best could be Saturday's late game, Huntington against Chesapeake, Ohio.
