MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The Big 12 Conference on Monday announced a fairly significant change to West Virginia's 2014 football schedule.
The Mountaineers will now play Oklahoma a week earlier than originally scheduled, moving the game from Sept. 27 to Sept. 20. West Virginia had been scheduled off the weekend of Sept. 20 and now will have the following week off.
That means WVU will begin the season with four straight games before an off week, instead of three. The Mountaineers open with Alabama at the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Aug. 30, then play at home against Towson and on the road at Maryland before meeting Oklahoma.
The off week now comes before the Oct. 4 homecoming game against Kansas.
The change was made to accommodate television, although a network for the WVU-OU game has not been determined. Oklahoma's schedule switches a previously-scheduled game against Tulsa from Sept. 20 to Sept. 27.
The school also divulged its spring practice schedule Monday. The 15 permitted workouts will begin earlier than normal, on March 2.
After the first week, the team will take a week off for the school's spring break before resuming. The annual Gold-Blue game is scheduled for Saturday, April 12.
Big 12 switches dates
IRVING, Texas -- The Big 12 has made three changes to its 2014 football schedule.
Besides two Oklahoma game dates switching (see story above), SEC champion Auburn's game at Kansas State has been moved to Sept. 18, a Thursday night, for a national ESPN broadcast.
The game had been set for two days after that.
More changes are possible.
Television selections for the first three weeks of the season and special dates aren't due to the Big 12 conference until June 1.
